Opium Highs and Free falls

Sometimes, I wonder we as Christians live for the highs that the Spirit allows us to experience... the praise and worships, the rallies, the feel-good get-togethers, the wonderful retreats where we FEEL His love all around... But is there more in our Catholic-Christian spirituality that God calls us towards?

Over the past week or so, many within the rally crew have praised and thanked God for the apparent "success" of the rally... which by the way, is beautiful. However, once this feel-good factor dies down, and the routine of daily life kicks in once again, what happens next? Are we all going to be lost because there's "nothing to do on Sundays anymore" since rehearsals are over? Has the rally been an event that has sparked off REAL CHANGES in our lives, or are we going back to our old ways, old habits, back into the plateauing spiritual journey... and all we can do is reminisce on what had been, what was, and possibly hold-on to these memories and wait out for the next opportunity to climb up the mountain again? And when we have our heads in the clouds, do we immediately jump off the mountain in a free fall once the experience of the high is over?

At daily mass in Holy Cross, Fr Franz always reminds the congregation in his opening prayer to be aware of the Holy Spirit who is GROWING in us DAILY... how beautiful an expression!! But are we truly aware? Are we drawing closer to Him who calls us everyday, He who holds us in the palm of His hands in which our names have been inscribed upon; He who calls us by name, He who paid the ultimate price for our sins by becoming one like us, a slave, to die on the cross as a common criminal? Or are we merely seeking another high in life, as if He provides a shot of opium into our system so that life isn't so mundane, an ecstacy pill that allows us to jump up and down for an hour or two so that for the subsequent few months, this experience of ecstacy will sustain us?

Ultimately, we as worshippers of Christ are called to holiness... yes, that includes praising and worshipping Him at every opportune moment, yes that includes doing His will as He commands... but that also includes establishing a relationship with Him through spending QUALITY PRAYER TIME... and to top it all off, receiving Him in the HOLY EUCHARIST as often as we can. If not, we may become what St Paul warns us against, being resounding gongs and clashing cymbals (1 Cor 13:1).

Lord, give us a greater desire to know you more...
give us an understanding of Your love for us...
give us the discipline to spend time with You daily...
Lord, may we not be mere cymbals and gongs,
but rather small little mirrors that reflect
Your glory, Your light and Your love to all.
May we recede, and You increase
Amen.

Hello. Just happened to stumble upon your group blog. The years have worn away with my belief in spiritual highs. I think the most blessed 'feeling' that God can inspire within us is a knowing and presence of mind that there can never be a true barrier between 'me' and Him, and that we can come back to Him anytime, so long as will it.

I'm really happy for you guys, having grounded yourselves in our God, I see how hard is it for any force to gravitate you from Him. Spiritual high or not.

God Bless brothers,
dre
