O God You Search Me
Ash Wednesday, Lent, Good Friday... more days of fasting, abstaining, denying ourselves of our desires... atonement for our sins and imperfections... almsgiving (which means less money to spend on the things we want to buy... there goes my Mazda 3)... more prayer time (Holy Hour, Divine Mercy, Rosary, Stations of the Cross)...
Doesn't Lent sound tiring, sad and draining in this manner?
No! That is far from what the Lord is inviting us to do for Lent!
For us in Singapore who don't really realise it, Lent actually falls during the season of Spring in the temperate countries. And contrary to popular belief, it is a time of CELEBRATION!
*Gasp*... some of you would probably be asking if I'm out of my mind.... but I'm not!!
Lent is a time of preparation for the coming and the ultimate triumph of our Lord... EASTER!! Therefore how can it be a time of sadness and dreariness? The Lord is inviting us to prepare for His return in glory, His wedding banquet that all of us are guests.
So, how do we merge this attitude to that of the pillars of our faith that no. 69 has just reminded us about - namely Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving?
Well, as the Lamb that was slain for our sins will rise again in glory, we hold fast to Him, remembering that He is our source of strength, our all in all; that we purify ourselves of our iniquity through denying ourselves of our desires and wants, remembering that He has come to die for our sins, He who was "pierced for our offenses, crushed for our sins, whose stripes have healed us" (Is 53:5). So through all this we remember how God has showered us with His blessings and gifts, so we can praise and celebrate for all He has done for us!
Anyway, the following song struck me deeply during Ash Wednesday mass in NUS. It is a traditional hymn that is inspired from Psalm 139. It reminded me of how much I need the Lord, and how He is always around me... and most of all how He knows my heart and how difficult the struggles I face... simply beautiful and comforting.

O God You Search Me
O God, you search me and you know me.
All my thoughts lie open to your gaze.
When I walk or lie down you are before me:
Ever the maker and keeper of my days.
You know my resting and my rising.
You discern my purpose from afar,
And with love everlasting you besiege me:
In every moment of life or death, you are.
For you created me and shaped me,
Gave me life within my mother's womb.
For the wonder of who I am I praise you:
Safe in your hands, all creation is made new.
