Why Do We Serve?

Perhaps the most important question i should take the liberty to ask myself as i offer my time and talents to the church is, 'Why do i serve?'

What is my motivation and intent in engaging my time and talents in the Church?

Is it for vanity and self-glorification?

Am i serving because my buddies are seving in the same ministry too?

Or is it because i've really got nothing else better to do?

Christ's whole life expresses His mission: 'to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.' - Mark 10:45.

Definitely, service in Church is not the only way to serve God. For we do have an evangelistic purpose and responsibility in our daily living as well - to be Christ and thus kindle the Light in others.

However, isn't it paramount that no matter how far we stray from God, some form of link with the Church (community) should be preserved?

For this is one reason why we serve: to encounter God's presence in the true meaning of the Church - the people, the Body of Christ - always alive and active and subsequently to contribute to the communal edification while attesting to the ownership of the community.

In today's Liberal era, the secular values of obscenity and impurity which accompany the inevitable propagation of the mass medie begets a corrupt generation. Every day, the very foundations of Faith are being subjugated by offers of the thrilling and alternative lifestyles the world has to offer.

And therein lies the challenge. Seemingly insurmountable, but only with the grace of God.

In all humility and with righteousness endowed by You, Lord, I serve to dispel immorality, and to propagate a fullness of life in You.

Lord, I am your hands and feet on earth; I serve You, because I love you.

Use me to extend thy Reign here on earth!

PS. Thanks, Hsien Li, for prompting me to reflect deeper.
